Spirit Airlines fans are now feeling relief since the airline announced the completion of it’s financial restructuring.

Along with this news, the airline has announced plenty of new routes coming this spring. One airport in particular getting some love is Newark Liberty International Airport.

Spirit is adding the following route pairings from Newark Liberty International Airport during late Spring/Early Summer of 2025.

  • Newark – Chattanooga starting June 4th
  • Newark – Columbia starting June 6th
  • Newark – Louisville starting in May
  • Newark – Raleigh starting in May

The added service from Newark comes along with 36 other routes nationwide expected to begin this spring.

Spirit Airlines commented “We are adding 40 routes to our network starting this May. The new flights give our guests more high-value options to discover new destinations and experience Spirit’s new travel options and enhanced guest experience.”

Before the expansion, Spirit flew to 18 destinations from Newark International Airport. After this expansion, the total is now 22 destinations.

Spirit is the number one ultra low cost carrier currently flying from Newark. Allegiant Air, Frontier, and Sun Country also operate from the airport, but don’t offer as much service as Spirit does.

A case can be made that Spirit is trying to dominate the Greater New York and Greater Philadelphia ultra low cost market. Frontier Airlines focuses much of their attention serving Philadelphia. Spirit also has a decent presence in Philly. But Spirit dominates Newark and New York – LaGuardia when it comes to the amount of routes being flown.

What Does This Mean For Spirit Customers From Newark?

Spirit is cementing itself as the primary ultra low cost carrier in Newark.

The ultra low cost carrier scene in New York has been hot as of late. With Frontier adding flights from JFK, Spirit is likely feeling threatened in the region. Frontier likely thought it was a good time to capitalize. Considering Spirit’s financial troubles as of late.

But Spirit still has a leg up on Frontier in the region. Spirit has more flights from LaGuardia. It has more flights from Newark than Frontier. These flights also go to most major cities across the country.

The recently added service from Newark only helps Spirit’s commitment to the Greater New York Area.

Spirit is filling a gap in its service from Newark.

Spirit Airlines was a bit soft in its offerings from Newark to the Carolinas. The airline touches all corners of the United States (beside the Pacific Northwest) with nonstop flights from Newark.

Yet, states like Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina were missing from it’s network.

More and more airlines as of late have been committing to the Carolinas and the regions surrounding it. Especially from the New York Area. Tourism to these areas are getting more popular. Spirit has identified this soft spot and addressed it by offering flights from Newark.
