Southwest Airlines will offer nonstop flights between San Diego International Airport and Fresno Yosemite International Airport starting on October 2nd, 2025.
This route will operate twice daily from Sunday to Friday and once on Saturdays.
This new service is yet another pillar in Southwest’s commitment to the Fresno area. The airline currently flies two other routes into Fresno from Denver and Las Vegas. They also have a seasonal route from Dallas Love Field.
Director of Aviation at Fresno Yosemite International Airport, Henry Thompson commented on Southwest’s newest addition – “The additional San Diego service operated by Southwest Airlines demonstrates the airline’s confidence in our market and is timely with the excitement and growth occurring at FAT (Fresno Yosemite International Airport) including the anticipated completion of the new terminal expansion in fall 2025.”
How Travelers Will Benefit from Southwest’s New Route
More Access to California’s National Parks and Beaches
Southwest’s new route pairing is great for Californians looking for weekend getaways. The state is unique because it features a duality of fun activities in the North and South.
Northern Californians can now fly South via Fresno to San Diego for warm weather and go to the beach.
Southern Californians can travel North from San Diego to Fresno for a weekend of hiking at the nearby Yosemite National Park.
Ultimately, the introduction of this flight benefits the economy of California. The flight makes it easier to travel across the state, allowing visitors to explore local communities and attractions—boosting California’s economy.
Introduction of Competition on This Route Pairing
Customers enjoy added competition. Before Southwest’s announcement, Alaska Airlines was the sole carrier operating flights between San Diego and Fresno.
This meant that Alaska Airlines was making 100% of all the revenue they could make on this route. Since there was no competition.
Southwest’s arrival on this route allows passengers not happy with Alaska’s service, an alternative option.
Southwest is such a popular nationwide airline. Their move into Fresno will be a welcomed addition. They do have a competitive advantage when offering connecting flights for Fresno passengers.
Alaska Airlines connects to Fresno via their hub at San Diego, Portland, and Seattle. Connecting passengers will need to fly either North or South to find a connecting flight. If they want to be flying under the same airline.
Southwest offers flights to Fresno from their hubs in Denver, Las Vegas, Dallas, and San Diego.
For passengers coming from the East Coast looking to spend the weekend hiking at Yosemite, Southwest seems to be the better option.
Alaska doesn’t seem as an appetizing option for non West Coast travelers looking to get into Fresno. So, it’ll be interesting to see how much Southwest can take a bite out of Alaska’s pie on the West Coast on this route.
