AirTran Airways was a low cost airline based in Orlando, Florida that was founded in 1993 and operated until 2014 when it merged with Southwest Airlines.
AirTran offered coast to coast domestic flights and some international flights to Mexico & Caribbean. It was also known for having a no-frills business class and a unique callsign of “Citrus” paying homage to it’s Florida roots.
The acquisition of AirTran by Southwest Airlines was significant because Southwest took over AirTran’s international presence in Mexico and the Caribbean and obtained AirTran’s landing slots at New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington D.C, both airports Southwest didn’t serve at the time.
