On August 24th, 2023, BermudAir Founder and CEO Adam Scott announced the launch of BermudAir. BermudAir is a Bermuda-based airline that will offer year-round service to destinations in the United States.
Where BermudAir’s First Flights Are Going?
He announced the first of three direct routes in which tickets went on sale. BermudAir flights will initially depart from Bermuda L.F Wade International Airport. The airline is offering three destinations; Boston, Fort Lauderdale, and Westchester, New York. Specifically, the airline will be flying into these airports.
- Boston Logan International Airport
- Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport
- Westchester County Airport
The flights from Bermuda to Boston and Westchester will begin on August 31st. The first flight between Bermuda and Fort Lauderdale will start on August 31st.
BermudAir’s Value Proposition
The value proposition for the airline is to provide direct service for travelers on the East Coast of the United States with greater access to Bermuda. They would like to fill in the seasonal gaps in travel associated with travel to the Caribbean. Travel tends to pick up during the winter months. People on the East Coast try to escape the winter weather. This demand wanes during the summer months when the weather is more pleasant.
BermudAir is Bermuda’s first national airline. The routes connecting to the United States will benefit the economy of Bermuda as it will potentially create a year-round customer base instead of the peaks and valleys of the tourist seasons.
BermudAir Interesting Seating Concept and Aircraft Choice
BermudAir will utilize the popular Embraer 175 currently used by most regional airlines. The first initial flights will be using an 88-seat configuration.
However, the airline is taking a new approach on future flights to seating configuration by offering a concept known as “Aisle class”. They want to eliminate the notion of a window and an aisle seat. So the airline has decided to limit the number of seats on the aircraft to only 30 seats. Every person will have their own window seat.
Coupled with the aisle seat, passengers will enjoy free wifi, a flight entertainment system, and under-seat stowage for carry-on and personal items. Bermuda Air plans to eliminate overhead bins to create a spacious environment and to speed up boarding and deplaning times.
Your Weekend Travel’s Thoughts on The BermudAir Announcement
Seeing how the BermudAir plans plays out in the market will be interesting. Bermuda Air is definitely taking a risk by sacrificing seating for a more comfortable experience. It’s a risky gamble when you can categorize Bermuda as a destination that people might only visit on vacation. There isn’t a clear demand for business travel, at least from the United States to Bermuda immediately.
As for locations, Boston and Westchester are pretty solid choices. Flying out of Westchester is becoming a much better alternative than dealing with the hassle of LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark Airports. Bermuda can even look into possibly flying out of Islip Airport on Long Island, to capture the alternative airport market share in the tri-state area.
As for Fort Lauderdale, it’s interesting that BermudAir went with this destination. They are both popular destinations for people looking to beat the cold or bad weather. The only way this route may work is if people see travel to Bermuda as an add-on to a vacation to South Florida. It might be even competitive against the cruise line industry. For example, why waste days on a cruise ship getting to Bermuda when you can be there in less than 1 hour on BermudAir?
Anyway, we’re excited to see what this airline can do. They have an interesting business model that we hope converts into tremendous success for the company and Bermuda as a whole.
