Spirit Airlines Adds Belize City via Fort Lauderdale

Spirit Airlines launches nonstop flights from Fort Lauderdale to Belize City starting November 2025. Opening affordable travel to Central America.

Following the trend of growth at Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport, Spirit Airlines has added more new routes at the airport.

Starting November 21, 2025, Spirit will begin new international service from Fort Lauderdale to Belize City, operating three times per week. This new route will utilize Belize City’s Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport.

This route pairing will be the first nonstop service between the two cities. No other airline currently offers nonstop flights between Fort Lauderdale and Belize City.

Spirit has a major presence at Fort Lauderdale. It already flies over 100 daily flights to more than 70 destinations across the U.S., Caribbean, and Latin America from the airport. With the Belize addition, the airline continues to strengthen its leisure-focused network from Fort Lauderdale.

This new flight benefits both U.S.-based vacationers and Belizean travelers. Belize is known for its lush rainforests and the world’s second largest barrier reef. It is a top destination for outdoor adventure seekers.

A Route with Two-Way Benefits

For Belizeans, having a flight to Fort Lauderdale provides greater access to Florida and Spirit’s broader domestic network. This is especially valuable given the limited number of U.S. cities currently offering nonstop flights to Belize.

Spirit will also be the only ultra-low-cost carrier with service between the U.S. and Belize. This gives budget-conscious travelers an affordable travel option, provided they are willing to sacrifice some creature comforts.

What This Means for Spirit’s Broader Strategy

As we have covered previously, Florida has become a key battleground for airlines due to shifting travel patterns in the U.S. market. More Americans are opting for affordable, close-to-home getaways rather than long-haul international trips. This explains why JetBlue and American have been expanding their presence in Florida and the Caribbean. Spirit is doing the same.

With the winter travel season approaching, this Belize City route adds a fresh option for Spirit in Florida’s already competitive leisure market. It is a strategic move to keep the airline’s schedule relevant and attractive.

Spirit is coming out of bankruptcy and planning to furloughed pilots in the Fall, so it has limited room for error when launching new routes. This route addition suggests the airline has strong data pointing to demand on both ends of this aroute.

Why This Route Matters

This is a smart move for Spirit. It is the first airline at Fort Lauderdale to launch service to Belize City and the first U.S. ultra-low-cost carrier to operate in Belize.

JetBlue is a strong competitor in the Caribbean with superior onboard comfort and service. However, it cannot match Spirit’s ultra-low fares. United and American offer a more premium experience, but in today’s price-sensitive environment, Spirit’s entry comes at the right time. The airline could capture a portion of market share.

If Spirit can sustain profitability on this route, it may become a model for additional international expansion in underserved leisure markets.
