Frontier Airlines has been growing its New York area presence. On January 7th, 2025, the airline revealed new routes from JFK Airport. These new routes solidify its greater commitment to the New York City region.
The three new flights from JFK will begin in the spring.
Frontier’s daily service to Miami will begin on March 30th, 2025. On April 22nd, a four times per week flight to Dallas – Fort Worth will begin. Finally, Frontier’s Los Angeles daily route will start up on May 1st.
Josh Flyr, Vice President of Network and Operations Designs for Frontier Airlines commented “With the launch of these ultra-low fare flights to Miami, Dallas and Los Angeles, we are increasing the availability of affordable travel to top destinations for New Yorkers, as well as making a New York adventure or business trip that much more affordable for budget-savvy consumers across the United States.”
Frontier only began flying from New York – JFK International Airport. In March 2024, the airline announced flights were starting up from JFK and Newark. Before then, Frontier had flights from LaGuardia Airport and Long Island MacArthur Airport.
Since that initial announcement, Frontier’s offerings from JFK grew to five destinations. With these new flight announcements, that total will now be eight.
What Does This Mean for Frontier and its Customers?
More New York Area Ultra Low Cost Service
With Frontier expanding to New York – JFK Airport, more New York customers will have more affordable flight options available to them. With coast to coast service restricted from LaGuardia due to it’s perimeter rule, New Yorker’s can now find a cheap transcon option with Frontier on its Los Angeles route.
New Yorkers also trying to get to Florida with Frontier, now don’t also have to trek to Long Island MacArthur Airport. The bulk of Frontier’s flights from Long Island go down to Florida. But none from LaGuardia or Newark do. Frontier’s JFK – Miami flight solves that problem.
Frontier’s presence at JFK increases the national footprint from New York as well as allow budget conscious travelers from spending too much on air fare flying with the other major airline.
Frontier’s Rapid Departure from the Norm
It is surprising that Frontier decided to offer flights from John F Kennedy International Airport. But, they definitely capitalized on a major market opportunity. It is hard for airlines to gain landing slots at JFK. They are expensive and limited in number. For that reason, no other ULCC’s fly from JFK.
They also may of taken advantage of the financial troubles that JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines have been going through. JetBlue is one of JFK’s most prominent airlines and likely the best option customers have to fly low cost. With all JetBlue’s issues, Frontier has positioned themselves to grab some of the exhaust of JetBlue’s network route reductions in the New York market.
While Spirit Airlines doesn’t fly from JFK, they do have a small presence at LaGuardia and Newark. While Spirit is going through their Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Frontier must have believed it was the right time to make their move and capture some of Spirit’s market share in the New York Area.
It is unlikely that Frontier Airline will expand more in the New York Area, it is not out of the realm of possibility. Could their be a day that Frontier becomes known as “The New York Airline”?
