Republic Airways is a regional airline based out of Indianapolis, Indiana.

It currently operates smaller commuter flights for United Express, Delta Connection, and American Eagle.

Republic Airways destinations are primarily found on the eastern coast of the United States and Canada.

History of Republic Airways

According to Republic Airways, the company first got its start in 1973 when Joel and Gloria Hall purchased Chautauqua Airlines. Chautauqua Airlines was also based in Indianapolis, flew mostly in the Northeastern portion of the United States, and had crew bases at the New York Area airports, Louisville, and Columbus.

It was one of the first airlines to agree to a codeshare agreement. It was partnered with Alleghany Airlines which later became U.S Airways.

During the mid to late 1990s,  the owners decided to form a holding company with Chautauqua Airlines as its only owned property. This holding company was named “Republic” because Republic was once an operating airline and would have more name recognition than “Chautauqua”.

In 1999, they added another subsidiary to the portfolio. Republic Airlines was born. However, the entity remained dormant until 2004.

In 2004, Republic was finally activated due to the scope clause which limits the amount of passengers a regional jet can carry. At the time, Chautauqua Airlines was performing flights for American Airlines, in a regional jet that held 44 passengers. They also were taking trips for another major airline, however offering seating for 77 passengers. This put American Airlines in jeopardy of being non-compliant with the scope clause.

With that said, the holding group decided to activate “Republic” and transfer the regional jets that were configured in the 77-seat cabin over so that American Airlines and Chautauqua complied with the scope clause.

Since then Republic has entered several partnerships with various major airlines. Today, Republic is contracted to fly with American Airlines as American Eagle, United Airlines as United Express, and Delta Air Lines as Delta Connection.
