Do you ever feel the need to get away, far far away but don’t want to leave the United States? We have you covered with our list of the top 5 longest domestic flights in the USA!
We scanned through data of all the flights offered by major American airlines and found the longest flight routes currently being operated.
This guide will provide you with some insights about the flight, the aircraft, and the airlines that you will be flying on.
1. Boston, Massachusetts to Honolulu, Hawaii on Hawaiian Airline Flight 89
The longest flight between states being offered by an American airline today is flight 89 on Hawaiian Airlines.
Hawaiian Airlines is an airline based out of the state of Hawaii (you probably guessed it). They have service to just about every major city in the United States.
With Hawaii being a state located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, it’s a bit of a no-brainer that the airline would have some of the longest flights offered to and from the contiguous United States.
Its eastmost destination is Boston, Massachusetts.
The flight from Boston to Honolulu spans a distance of about 5100 miles.
You will spend roughly 10 hours in the air from take-off to landing.
Luckily, you will be flying on Hawaiian’s widebody airplane, the Airbus A330-200. This Airbus is more than capable of handling this route thanks to its 6000 to 7000-mile range.
It stores enough fuel in one wing that can be carried on a standard Airbus A320, so you don’t have to worry about running out of gas over the Pacific.
Hawaiian Airlines is a wonderful airline to fly on. They have one of the best safety records amongst all American airlines. To make the flight more comfortable, the airline has plenty of amenities like a flight entertainment system, wifi, and items like pillows and blankets to make the long-haul flight as comfy as possible.
2. New York, New York to Honolulu on Delta Airlines Flight 312
Although Hawaiian Airlines also flies this same route, for our second longest flight, we’ll cover Delta Airlines and provide you with some details about their flight experience.
The nonstop flight from New York Kennedy International Airport to Honolulu, Hawaii is Delta’s longest domestic flight within United States territory.
Flight 312’s total flight distance is about 5030 miles depending much on the departure and landing procedures in New York. Since New York is about 400 miles southwest of Boston, it makes sense that this flight is the second longest U.S. domestic flight being flown by major airlines today.
Following much of the same sentiments from the Boston to Honolulu flight, the one notable difference is that Delta uses a Boeing 767-300 for this long-haul flight.
The Boeing 767-300 is very comparable to the Airbus A330 in terms of performance, however, it does have a shorter range, totaling more closer to 5000 miles. The 767 is an older aircraft than the Airbus A333, with the latter being built with more fuel efficiency in mind.
Delta provides many inflight amenities to make this long haul across the United States and Pacific more comfortable. You can learn more about their travel classes and some of their perks by visiting our guide to flying with Delta Airlines.
3. Newark, New Jersey to Anchorage, Alaska on United Airlines Flight 1267
The third longest domestic flight in the United States is the brings us up north to Anchorage, Alaska.
United Airlines Flight 1267 departs Newark Liberty International Airport and flies across the United States and Canada and lands in Anchorage International Airport.
This flight is a 3300-mile flight and takes about 7 hours to complete.
For travelers on this flight, it’s worth noting that the aircraft you will be flying on is the Boeing 737 Max 8. The 737 is a narrowbody aircraft and probably doesn’t provide as much comfort as a widebody aircraft on these long-haul flights like an Airbus A330 or Boeing 767 would. However, the Boeing 737 Max 8 is more than capable aircraft to handle this route.
The Boeing 737 Max 8 is capable of flying 3600 miles when fully loaded on fuel.
United Airlines does offer its share of flight options to make this lengthy trip more comfortable. They do have first class, economy plus, and standard economy seating available on their 737 Max 8’s. First class and economy plus has the added benefit of more seat space and legroom.
You will have access to the internet once you’re above 10,000 feet through United’s Wifi. Also, there is a complementary meal service on this particular flight for first class and economy plus classes since the flight is greater than 2.5 hours long.
